I feel weird without a front page

Posted on September 26, 2010 by cherryteresa

My site doesn’t have a front page anymore. I feel odd. Why? Because when I first read articles about web design in the 90s, and later took courses about it in college, it was embedded into my head that you had to have a front page/welcome page. I was taught that to not have one would be like having a resume with no cover page. But I think things have changed since then. I’ve noticed over the past few years that websites choose whether or not to have it based on the content. If a site has different options – such as viewing it in different languages or platforms (computer vs. mobile, flash vs. non-flash, high-speed vs. low-speed connection) – then it makes sense to have a welcome page with different options to enter the rest of the site. But for many other sites, such as this one, there is no absolute need for a welcome page. Some bands still use nifty flash intros for aesthetic reasons (and I don’t have a problem with that), but it seems as if that’s a trend that has died in the States (but still seems to be big in other countries).

So here I am with this newly-designed website and no welcome page. I know it’s the right thing to do, but it feels so wrong. Haha.
